Chapter 12

Kieran

Haven’s face had paled when she reaped the cat’s soul. Her color hadn’t returned, and the meeting seemed to take more from her. She was a reaper. This was the most excitement she’d ever had in her life. My mate needed rest.

My heart constricted at calling her my mate. She’d given me some hope at the Deep that she could possibly enjoy my company. Her fingers in my fur, her face burrowing into it as well, would be touches I’d always remember. Especially when things were cleaned up here and I took her back home to the real world. She’d realize the In-Between wasn’t for her. There was no sun, no beauty that she was used to, and the work was mostly boring.

Our lives weren’t as filled with excitement as her world was. We found our ways to have fun, but would someone from the real world enjoy our simple lives?

“Kieran?” Haven’s voice startled me from my thoughts, and I looked up from where I’d been staring at the floor but not seeing it.

My brothers had left. Haven and I were alone in my house. Things weren’t as tidy as they could have been. I’d gone on a patrol with the intent to come back and clean. An escape had been the last thing on my mind. Now I’d made a great impression with Haven.

“Um, I’ll show you the guest room. I promise it’s clean.” Not that my house was dirty. I’d just left some games out that I’d been playing with Cade. Plus, my nieces and nephews had been over. Their toys were scattered around the living area. The kitchen, I hadn’t cleaned it well enough.

“Kieran, stop.” Haven walked over and put her arms around my waist. “It’s a lovely house. Farren’s kids were over, I’m assuming?” She stepped back and smiled at me but didn’t release me.

I nodded. “Cade had them for the day along with my sisters’ kids. They came over for some games. Tevin was on my team playing chess. Do people in your world still play chess?”

She shrugged and stepped back, eyeing the game. “Not as much as they used to, I think. Dad and I used to play.”

“Kit didn’t?”

Haven laughed. The first good laugh she’d had during a conversation about her fiancé. “Kit hated chess. That was the one thing we couldn’t agree on. When this is over, you and Dad will have to play. If you’re any good.” She tipped her chin up in challenge.

My blood boiled. I stepped up to her, in her space, and gave a grin. “I’m good, Haven. Very good.”

Her gulp was audible and made me crave her more. But she wasn’t ready for me to want any part of her. And we were fooling ourselves. Her father hated me. His face from the Diner took the last of the fun from me.

I stepped back. “I’ll show you to your room. You should rest. I have a feeling things won’t go as smoothly as we hope.”

Haven followed me down a hallway off the living area.
